Borne out of the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, the first organization to call itself a Black Student Union started at San Francisco State University (SFSU) in 1966. Not long after, BSUs began popping up at universities across the country, including at the University of Washington in 1968.

When professor Sonja Haynes Stone died of a stroke in 1991, BSM members voiced their dissatisfaction with the small black cultural center in the Student Union and pushed for a freestanding building dedicated to the late professor.But former Chancellor Paul Hardin said the center should be "a forum and not a fortress," and the Black Cultural Center's suite in the Union was dedicated to Stone. The Black Student Unions mission is to first, unify Black people on San Francisco States campus through cultural, political, social, and informational events. Second is to nationalize our organization and create a solidified communicative database with other Black Student Unions across the country.

Political Organization On October 29, 1969 the Black Student Union was formed at Florida Technological University (now University of central Florida). Because most of the students at FTU were white, black students felt the need join together to create real change on campus. The Black Student Union is a recognized student organization designed to provide leadership for Black students that are part of the CSUN campus community. The directive of the BSU is to remain creative, diligent, and proactive in all matters affecting Black students, while strongly promoting and aiding the academic excellence of its members. The purpose of the Black Student Union is to represent the interest of the Black student populace at all times emphasizing political, community, social, and educational concerns while promoting the general welfare of the Black student populace; by fostering communications between the Black Student Union and the university, and to provide a central agency through which Black students may voice their opinion and gain support on any and all matters.
